Canada Strengthens Indo-Pacific Ties: New eTA Access for Eligible Travellers from Indonesia and Malaysia (May 26, 2026)
As of May 26, 2026 (5:30 a.m. ET), Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has introduced significant changes to visa requirements for citizens of Indonesia and Malaysia.
Key Highlights:
Eligible citizens can now apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) instead of a full visitor visa when flying to or transiting through Canada.
Eligibility Criteria:
Held a Canadian Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) in the last 10 years, OR
Currently hold a valid US non-immigrant visa (e.g., B1/B2).
Existing valid Canadian TRVs remain usable until expiry.
eTA applications are quick, online, and cost only CAD $7.
This move aims to boost trade, business, tourism, and people-to-people connections between Canada and these important Indo-Pacific partners while maintaining strong border security.
